Evaluation - "In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? "

This is the opening title sequence for Se7en, one of the films that inspired us in the creation of our title sequence.

This sequence displays many forms and conventions of thriller films.

  • There is a red wash used in some scenes which instils a feeling of danger
  • The full identity of the character we're viewing is hidden from us to create suspense
  • There are extreme close ups of weapons and images of torture, to add to the feeling of danger
  • The font use is dis-jointed and makes the viewer feel uneasy
  • The soundtrack creates an atmosphere of suspense and gets more intense as the sequence comes to a climax
  • Images are flashed between scenes and the video fades to black leaving only the titles, this adds to the feeling of it being a thriller, because the lack of continuous video keeps the viewers guessing as to what will happen next, the trademark of a thriller film

Above is a screenshot from the opening sequence of wild wild west, another film which inspired us, the fast appearing white lines allowed for similtaneous video tracks to be played clearly, and in quick succession, creating a feeling of fast paced action.

Below is our video, as you can see we have followed many of the forms and conventions, such as: Red wash to invoke feeling of danger, extreme close ups focusing on weapons, a suspenseful and atmospheric soundtrack, dis-jointed and uneasy fonts and the hiding of characters full identities.
